Indoor plants have made a wonderful resurgence in recent years, and here at the Mangoni Family Merchants, we’re all for it!
Everyone’s indoor plant journey looks a little different. Whether its finding an excuse to hear to the local nursery to add to your collection, scrolling Facebook marketplace and adopting yet another plant, or growing your own from cuttings, everybody has a story. We love bringing the outdoors, indoors, and so we’ve compiled our top 5 favourite indoor plants
Fiddle leaf – Ficus lyrata
One of the most well known and celebrated indoor plants- and for good reason!
The fiddle leaf fig will quickly become a stunning focal point of your indoor space. Large architectural deep green leaves are a stunning way to introduce greenery and height to an empty corner of your home. Growing up to 2-3m in height indoors, (or the ceiling height, whatever comes first) the fiddle leaf fig is a must have for indoor plant lovers!
Peace Lilly – Spathiphyllum var.
The ever-reliable peace lily is a great first plant for your foray into indoor gardening.
And with so many varieties on the market these days you’ll be sure to find the right one for you. Wonderful elongated white flowers become the centrepiece amongst the long deep glossy leaves. They come in a range of sizes, and we love the larger varieties, such as the ‘Blue Moon’, with its taller habit and contemporary foliage. The peace lily is a great option for those areas that struggle to get any sunlight.
Rubber Plant – Ficus elastica
Another reliable, resilient option for indoor gardening, the rubber plant comes in many colours. We’re going to look at two of the most common varieties that you may have already seen.
The deeper, darker maroon and purple leaves of the Ficus elastica ‘Burgundy’ are an easy way to introduce a variety of coloured foliage into your home. With its tight growth habit and option to grow up to 2m tall, it’ll be prefect for a large entrance or hallway.
Whereas the Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’ is eye catching with its almost fluorescent new green growth, and will suit a window position with indirect light. Use a simple black or white pot for maximum contrast
Kentia Palm - Howea forestiana
A simple, easy to maintain option for a position that’s receives a decent amount of sun. The Kentia palm has wonderful, feather like leaflets and is renowned for upright elegant growth, making it very sought after. It will help to purify the air making it a great option for your office or bedroom.
Olive Tree – Olea var.
Not often considered as an option for indoor planting, Olive trees are quickly becoming a sought after statement piece in Aussie homes.
Despite requiring more sunlight than your most common indoor plants, with careful planning and research, you can bring a touch of the Mediterranean indoors!
Will need a north facing window and rich, free draining soil, ideally in a larger pot. You may need to shift your olive tree to maximise the sun, including regular stints outdoors.
Pruning should take place just before the warmer months to encourage flushes of tight, compact foliage. We suggest starting with smaller stock to allow for adaptations to the indoor position.
As the weather starts to cool down, and the desire to get outside in the garden might start to dwindle, it could be the perfect time to get in touch with us, order some plants and start or add to your indoor plant collection!
